Background of the study:
Job burnout, characterized by chronic stress and emotional exhaustion, is a growing concern in the education sector. In Akure South, Ondo State, teachers face increasing demands, which can lead to reduced productivity and deteriorating job satisfaction (Adams, 2023). This study explores the prevalence of burnout among educators and examines its impact on teaching quality and workforce productivity (Brown, 2024). Contributing factors include workload pressures, inadequate support, and insufficient recognition. The research integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to assess burnout levels and identify key stressors. It also investigates coping mechanisms and the effectiveness of institutional support systems (Clark, 2025). By contextualizing burnout within the broader framework of occupational health, the study aims to propose practical strategies for mitigating burnout and enhancing productivity among teachers, ultimately improving educational outcomes.
Statement of the problem:
Teachers in Akure South are increasingly experiencing job burnout, leading to decreased productivity and compromised educational quality. High workloads and limited support systems contribute to stress and fatigue, adversely affecting both teachers and students (Adams, 2023). This study investigates the extent of burnout and its direct implications on workforce productivity. Addressing this issue is vital for ensuring sustainable teaching practices and improved educational outcomes (Brown, 2024; Clark, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To examine the prevalence of job burnout among teachers.
To assess the impact of burnout on workforce productivity in the education sector.
To recommend strategies for mitigating burnout and improving teacher performance.
Research questions:
What is the extent of job burnout among teachers in Akure South?
How does burnout affect productivity and teaching quality?
What strategies can reduce burnout and enhance performance?
Research Hypotheses:
High levels of burnout negatively affect teacher productivity.
Insufficient institutional support exacerbates job burnout.
Effective stress management strategies improve workforce productivity.
Significance of the study:
This study offers critical insights into the adverse effects of job burnout on teacher productivity. Its recommendations may assist educational institutions in developing targeted interventions to support educators and enhance overall teaching quality (Clark, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to teachers in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, focusing solely on the effects of job burnout on workforce productivity. It does not include other school staff or geographic regions.
Definitions of terms:
Job burnout: A state of chronic stress resulting in physical and emotional exhaustion.
Workforce productivity: The efficiency and effectiveness of employees in completing work tasks.
Occupational health: The overall well-being and health conditions of workers in a specific industry.
